Robert Gillaspy Jr. son of Robert Sr. was born in 1828. He married Rachel Hall in 1848. He filed a claim with the government in 1853 for 40 acres of land one and one-half miles east of a site of what is now Crothersville, IN. Later he bought 40 more acres adjacent and south of the original.
Robert Jr. and Rachel cleared much of the land and raised a family of nine children; six boys, . . .and three girls..
Besides being a farmer Robert Jr. was a Baptist minister. The family church membership was at Grassy Creek Baptist Church and later at Uniontown when the two churches merged. He raised his boys to be "preachers, teachers and tillers of the soil". He also operated a sorghum mill located along the Muscatatuck River.
The land, homesteaded in 1853, is still in possession of heirs of Robert Jr. and Rachel Gillaspy. . .
Please visit the website, A Genealogy History of the Gillaspy - Montgomery Family and Allied Families Hall and Gorrell for an in-depth and fascinating narrative written by J. Haskell Gillaspy in the early 1970s. The website is lovingly maintained by J. Haskell's grandson, and contains many pictures from the 1800s, as well as hand-drawn family charts.
