Mary Adell Pace O'Grady Ewell, age 82, passed away peacefully in her home in Pittsburg, California on Saturday, May 26, 2012. She was born to Harvey Rudolph (Chic) Pace and Aileen Spencer Middleton on January 6, 1930 in her maternal grandmother's home in Pomona Park, Florida.
"Marydell" is survived by: her children Marcia Martin, Dellory Matthews, Iris Davidson, Emory Martin, Danella Sessions, Charles O'Grady, and Tim Moore; step-son Tom O'Grady; brothers Bill and Rudy Pace; sisters Carleen Newman and Frances Burke Goodman; her 102-year-old aunt, Jo Evans; 38 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and numerous other family members.
She grew up in Florida and South Carolina, in close proximity to extended family. Later she resided in Texas, Utah and California. She never met a stranger and her definition of family was as broad as she could make it.
Marydell married Emory Spencer Martin in 1947 (divorced). She married James Edward Moore in 1971 (divorced). In 1976, she married Thomas Leonard O'Grady; he died in 2004. In 2005, she married Norman Grant Ewell; he died April 24, 2012.
In the 1960s she worked as a nurse's aide and a nurse, having graduated from the Herman Hospital School of Nursing as an LVN. Her family and her faith were paramount. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1965, she served in many callings and served a church mission with her husband Tom at the Provo Utah Tabernacle.
Particular interests included cooking, sewing, quilting, music, singing, dancing, reading, family history research, movies, camping and swimming. She loved her dogs, butterflies and flowers. As a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, she was proud of her Southern heritage and created a replica of a battle flag made by her great-great-grandmother.
Two memorial services will be held at LDS chapels. The first will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at 6550 S 2700 West, Taylorsville Utah, 84129. The second will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9 at 2201 Golf Club Road, Pittsburg, California, 94565. Interment will be at Eden Cemetery in Crescent City, Florida. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to The American Cancer Society or the missionary fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The family thanks Vitas Hospice for making it possible for Mary to spend her last days at home surrounded by loving family members.
