Old Resident Dies
Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Garver, who had lived in and near Afton for the last forty years, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. D. Meridith, in Joplin. Mrs. Garver had been in ill health for several years, having been stricken with paralysis about six weeks ago. She was born in Moberly, Mo., and was 88 years of old. In 1856 she was married to Benjamin F. Cunningham and to this union 14 children were born. Surviving children are: H. E. Cunningham of Afton, J. L. Cunningham of Miami, Mrs. Anna Cook of California, Mrs. Jose Brown of Wisconsin, Elmer Cunningham of Ponca City, Okla., J. W. Cunningham of Tulsa, and Mrs. C. D. Meridith of Joplin. Seven children preceded their mother in death. Mr. Cunningham died about 40 years ago. His widow later was married to Mr. Garver, who died several years later. Mrs. Garver was a member of the Presbyterian Church having joined in early childhood. Besides the seven children, she is survived by 29 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three sisters, and two brothers. Funeral services were conducted in Joplin on Thursday morning and the body taken to Vinita, where the Rev. Guy C. Ames, pastor of the Methodist church, South, here concluded the services at the grave. Burial was in the Vinita cemetery, beside her husband.
