Thomas Glascock Barrett, son of Thomas Samuel Barrett and the former Mary Savannah Glascock, was born on the 5th day of July 1838 in Augusta, Georgia. Thomas was the second of four children.
Thomas was named for his maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Glascock, a general in the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War. Following in his grandfathers tradition, Thomas' early education and preparation for college was at Richmond Academy in Augusta. He then entered the Georgia military institute at Marietta, where he graduated in 1858 with the rank of first lieutenant. At this time he was serving in a volunteer unit known as the Irish Volunteers.
On February 12th 1861, Thomas married Grace Arrington Ware, daughter of Edward Ware and the former Margaret Arrington of Clarke County, Georgia. Thomas and Grace had five children.
At the beginning of the Civil War, Thomas Barrett served in several units from Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina; seeing action at Santa Rosa Island, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dalton, Resaca, New Hope Church and Kenesaw Mountain. He was also in Savannah during the seize by Sherman. For his service he rose to the rank of a Lieut. Colonel.
At the end of the war, Thomas returned to Augusta and became a prominent business man; while serving in various municipal offices.
Thomas Glascock Barrett departed this life on the 6th of March 1906 at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 1 day. He was laid to rest beside his beloved wife of 32 years in the family plot at Magnolia Cemetery.
