Mrs Anne Phinizy, widow of the late Ferdinand Phinizy, one of the state's leading business men and a pioneer in the building of Athens and many of her leading enterprises, died at her home on Milledge avenue Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock after a prolonged illness of nearly four years. Her death did not come unexpectedly as she has been slowly sinking for several weeks.
Mrs Phinizy before her marriage was Miss Anne Barrett of Augusta; She came to Athens sixty years ago and since that date until her illness she was a prominent figure socially, her home always being open to her numberless friends all over the south. She cared little for club work but was rather a type of the Old South, reflecting in her life and character its loveliness and hospitality.
Surviving Mrs Phinizy are two sons, Barrett Phinizy of Athens, and Charles H Phinizy of Augusta, Savannah, a daughter, died in her youth. Billups Phinizy, of Athens, and Mrs A W Calhoun of Atlanta, are step children and Mrs Harriet G Jefferies, Mrs Victor Barbot and Mrs Russell Cohen of Augusta are neices and Thomas W and Judge William H Barrett of Augusta are nephews.
Mrs Phinizy was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Athens. The funeral will be conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by her pastor Rev E L Hill. interment following in Oconee cemetery.
