Hazel M. Courtney, 96, a resident of the Central Long-term Care Center in Norwalk, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the care center. She was born November 2, 1909 at What Cheer, the daughter of Dow Norse and Ida Theresa Schlaser Beever. Hazel graduated from the What Cheer High School and then attended the old Murphy Secretarial School in Oskaloosa. .

On April 19, 1930, she was married to John DeWitt at Oskaloosa, and he died April 19, 1953. She worked as the national accounts processor for Victor Comptometer for many years, retiring in 1974. On January 18, 1964, Hazel was married to Liston Courtney at Chicago, Illinois, and he died July 9, 1993. They moved to Oskaloosa in 1976. .

Her family includes two daughters: Johneta Horner and Margaret Cooper (and her husband, James Covington) all of Des Moines; a stepson: Michael Courtney of Pella; 4 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 22 great great grandchildren; a great great great granddaughter; and two sisters: Mabel Clucas of Des Moines and Mildred Irving of Chariton. .

Besides both of her husbands, Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; a great grandchild; a great great grandchild; a brother in infancy; and 2 sisters: Blanche Telin and Cora Blaylock. .

Funeral services for Hazel Courtney will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Michael Crouch officiating. Burial will be in the Hamilton Cemetery at Hamilton, Iowa. Visitation will begin on Monday after 9 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
