John William DeWitt son of George and Mary DeWitt, was born in Mahaska County, Iowa August 20, 1903 and grew to manhood in this community.
He attended the public schools and was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Sunday School in his childhood and youth.
He was united in marriage to Hazel Beever of What Cheer April 19, 1930 at which time he established his home in Oskaloosa and resied here until the time of his death, which occurred in Oakdale Sanitarium in Iowa City on Sunday April 12, 1953 from lung cancer.
To this union 2 children were born. Mrs. Johneta DeWitt Myers of Ottumwa and Margaret "Peggy" of Oskaloosa. Besides the 2 daughters he is survived by his widow, 2 grandchildren, Frank and Linda Myers, his mother Mary Ann DeWitt, 2 sisters, Mrs. Mae Welch of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Elmer Long of Des Moines and Fred McFarland who found in the home of his uncle John, an experience of welcome and security.
John was a member of the Eagle Lodge of Oskaloosa. He was employed by the city of Oskaloosa for the last 8 years. The last few months he was in failing health and the end of his pilgrimage came quite suddenly. One of the characteristics of John was his love for children and his kindly spirit and generous heartedness, with special concern for the little ones.
