Obituary

Columbia Herald, Maury County, Tennessee

Elinor Johnson Gordon, consort of Jesse M. Gordon, departed this life January 22nd, 1881, in the 79th year of her age. She died of pneumonia, from which she suffered intensely. She died in peace, calling her children and friends around her and asking them to meet her in heaven, where parting is no more. She had been for many years a believer, a Presbyterian in faith. Her favorite hymns were “Amazing grace” and “Am I a soldier of the cross”.

Her death reminds us of the olden times as it respects this region of country. A brief notice of her parents will be of interest. Johns[t]on Craig was born in Orange county, N.C., November 19th 1774; died September 17th 1848; aged 74 years. His wife, Martha (Blackwood) Craig survived him and died October 15th, 1856, aged 76 years. Mr. Johnson Craig married Martha Blackwood May 3rd, 1798, emigrated to Tennessee (date?), and settled near Mt. Pleasant, Maury county, on the place now known as Kittrell old mill place, where a fort was built as a place of safety. His brother, William, came with him and settled where Capt. Scott Jennings now resides. At the time they came, there was not even a tree marked where Mt. Pleasant now stands. Wolves, bears, panthers, and other wild beasts infested the country. They brought salt, sugar, and coffee from Franklin on horseback. The brothers had for several miles to cut their own road. Johnson Craig remained in Maury county until (1838?), when he started for Mississippi, but his health failing, he stopped near Summertown, at the Faust place, where Mr. Watkins now resides. Here he remained until his death. He and his wife were members of the old school Presbyterian church. They lived to see all their children, 14 in number—8 sons and 6 daughters—married and with families. The memory of the just is blessed.

Mrs. Gordon was buried in the Cemetery near Mt. Pleasant. Services by Rev. J. S. Frierson. May her children remember and fulfill her parting and dying request to them to meet her in heaven.
