PATRICIA "PAT" SMITH
Patricia Lucille Smith, aged 81, of 1710 S. Eddy and lifelong Fort Scott resident passed away Monday evening at 8:30 pm March 26, 2012 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri following an extended pneumonia-related illness.
Patricia Lucille Moore was born June 11, 1930 in Fort Scott to Ardelia Kate Moore and Harold Joel "Pat" Moore. Growing up, Patricia and family lived in an apartment above their JB Moore & Sons family grocery store at 10th & Main Street. Patricia attended Main Street Grade School as well as Fort Scott Junior High School and graduated Fort Scott High School in 1948. Patricia played flute in the high school band and orchestra. Several of Patricia's circle of friends at the time included Peggy Majors (Carlton), cousin Sarah Kay Jackson, Margie Bowers (Majors), "Rody" Marsh, Shirley Balocco, Patsy Lewis, Mary Alice Richmond, and Imogene Warren, to name a few. Patricia later attended Fort Scott Junior College.
Patricia and Gerald David "Firpo" Smith met while snow sledding shortly after his honorable discharge from the Navy in December 1947 and were married September 18, 1948 at the home of Patricia's grandmother Mrs. J.B. Moore at 1008 S. Main. Patricia and Firpo remained married for 36 years until his death February 28, 1985. Patricia was fiercely devoted to Firpo and family; demonstrably so during Firpo's health issues which included a triple-bypass heart surgery and later failing health. An acquaintance 20-years their junior, talking about them recently as a couple, characterized Firpo as "a real cool dude" and Patricia as "more quiet" by comparison.
Patricia and Firpo were very proud and loving parents of their son Charles Robert (b. 1965) and the family spent most of its free time together. Patricia and Firpo would always attend Charles' little league baseball games, school activities, and later his high school football games. Aside from personal happiness, their primary goal (mandate) for Charles was that, unlike themselves, he would get a college degree (which he did).
Charles was at Patricia's bedside when she passed. Other family survivors include 21 nieces and nephews including Kathy Stegge Wright and Gary Frye of Kansas City MO, in-laws Gail Potter and Margaret Weatherbie of Fort Scott, Lucille Smith of Shawnee, Elizabeth Shannon of Ardmore OK, and Johnny Mitzner of Grove OK, and a number of cousins including Sarah Kay Jackson and Virginia Carol Keal of Overland Park and Sujean Classen Jeffries of Middletown RI. Also preceding Patricia in death was an infant son David Arnold Smith (April 3-11, 1949), a sister Mary Jean Stegge and brother-in-law Dudley formerly of Joplin, an infant brother George Robert Moore, as well as her parents and grandparents J.B. & Maggie Moore and John & Kate Harris.
Patricia's Moore ancestors had originally settled in Bourbon County circa 1860 near Devon and Patricia's great grandfather Joe Moore served in the Kansas legislature in the late 1860's (an uncle Harry Warren also later served in the Kansas legislature). Another pair of great grandparents emigrated from Scotland while some other ancestors came from present-day Northern Ireland. Patricia's family later operated the family grocery store until the 1948. Among her small, but tight-knit group of relatives, Patricia was a niece of former Fort Scott Postmaster Burt Moore as well as a first cousin to former Bourbon County District Court Judge Charles Warren.
Also in 1948, Patricia began working at Western Insurance in Fort Scott, where she worked for most of her adult life including for Western's corporate successors American States and Safeco. Patricia survived the various mergers, acquisitions, and downsizings; retiring in 1998. Patricia worked as a secretary as well as in a number of other claims-related positions. In the latter part of her time with the company, Patricia would occasionally get assigned to out-of-town "storm duty" where she would travel to places that, for example, had been hit by a tornado or hail and she would help process claims and checks to policy holders. Through her professional life, Patricia made many friends and acquaintances young and old in Fort Scott and around the country and was very popular among her co-workers.
Growing up, Patricia and family attended the Methodist Church on National Ave. and later she, Firpo, and Charles attended the Presbyterian Church on Crawford Street. Patricia resided at her home on Eddy Street for over 50 years. Patricia and Firpo were both very proud to be from Fort Scott and content enough that it would've never occurred to them to live anywhere else.
Patricia was known for her beautiful smile ... someone recently observed that she "sparkled". Her eyes were hazel, but her eye color would sometimes change in the light and appeared grey. She had a large nose (though not unattractive); a smaller, more feminine version of her cousin J.B. Moore's nose. Patricia liked to read and would've done well had she attended university as she possessed a good work ethic and the necessary discipline. Patricia liked to laugh which would've drawn her to Firpo. Like others in her family, Patricia possessed a smart-ass streak though perhaps less-so being a mother and as she got older. Patricia recently said of her family and the 6-to-10 relatives who lived next door with others down the street: "that to get along in the family, you had to be either quiet or real boisterous."
The family encourages private sector community financial support for an area-wide dialysis treatment facility at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott. Currently, Fort Scott-area dialysis patients must travel to Pittsburg three times per week for their 3+ hour dialysis treatments and to either Joplin or Kansas City for ANY type of overnight medical treatment. Following renal failure and starting dialysis treatments in October 2011, Patricia's quality of life improved markedly and she regretted not having started dialysis treatments sooner despite the treatment impediments. In lieu of flowers, please send a financial contribution to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Attn: Rita Baker and reference "Fort Scott Dialysis".
A service will be held at Cheney-Witt Chapel Friday March 30 preceded a short visitation. Burial will follow at Fort Scott National Cemetery.

PATRICIA SMITH SERVICE
A Celebration of Life service for Patricia Lucille Smith was held at the Cheney Chapel on a beautiful Spring-time afternoon Friday March 30, 2012 with Rev. Chuck Russell presiding. Rev. Russell's theme was one of love and devotion and included were a number of references to Mrs. Smith's marriage to husband "Firpo" and to her relationship with son Charles.
There were floral arrangements, though in lieu of flowers, donations to "Fort Scott Dialysis" had been encouraged. In all, friends and family generously contributed in excess of $1200 to go towards a potential dialysis treatment facility at Mercy Hospital Fort Scott.
Musical selections included the life-affirming "You are the Sunshine of My Life" (Stevie Wonder), the sweetly elegant "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" (from "My Fair Lady"/Nat King Cole), and the resolutely hopeful "I'll Be Seeing You" (Tony Bennett) along with a Glenn Miller (a favorite of Mrs. Smith's) instrumental version of the nostalgic 1940's Cole Porter standard "Begin the Beguine" which played as attendees filed past the casket.
A funeral procession passing by Mrs. Smith's childhood home at 1002 S. Main was most regrettably not planned. A short graveside service followed at the Fort Scott National Cemetery where Mrs. Smith was laid to rest beside husband Firpo and very near to sister Mary Jean Stegge.
Among those represented at the service were Mrs. Smith's former co-workers at Western Insurance and American States, Eddy Street neighbors past and present, school classmates, Mrs. Smith's Harris/Jackson cousins, in-law Gail Potter and family, members of Firpo's cousin Rosalie Cox' family, along with other family and friends. Relatives attending from the Kansas City-area included Kathy Stegge Wright, Sarah K. Jackson, Virginia Carol Keal, Lucille Smith, Sarah & Michael Coleman, Craig Smith, Jimmy Smith, Steve Smith, and Gary Frye plus Gina Hall from Wichita and Don Frye Jr. & wife Gayle from Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Pallbearers included Doug and Brian Potter, Bob Jackson Jr., Bill Cox, Don Hall, and Mitch Quick. Honorary Pallbearers included Bob Jackson, Harry Warren, and Bob Miller.
Family members later met at the Smith home for a catered dinner from Chicken Annie's (another favorite of Mrs. Smith's).
It was later found, perhaps not coincidentally, that Mrs. Smith had passed away on the 90th wedding anniversary of her parents "Pat" and Ardelia Moore.
The "Firpo & Patricia Smith Fort Scott Business Scholarship" has been established through the FSCC Endowment Association at Fort Scott Community College.

Patricia Moore To Wed Sept. 18.
The announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Patricia Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moore, 1002 South Main, to Gerald Smith, son of Mrs. Eva Potter, 602 Short street, was last evening at a lovely announcement party given at the home of the honoree's grandmother, Mrs. J.B. Moore, 1008 South Main, by Mrs. Harry Warren.
The 7:30 dessert course was served at quartet tables set in a color scheme of pink and yellow. Bouquets of garden flowers used as centerpieces, were placed in assorted pyrex bowls which were later presented Miss Moore for her kitchen.
At each place were individual placecards affixed to candles. On the back of each card was the wedding date, Sept. 18, written in invisible ink, which was held over the candles flame to reveal the date. The marriage will take place at the home of Mrs. J.B. Moore. Individual favors were wrist corsages. A dessert course of individual decorated cakes and fruit punch was served.
Games appropriate to the occasion were enjoyed. Prizes were offered for the best uses of the centerpieces and for best sandwich recipes. Winners were Mrs. Eva Potter and Miss Roberta Armstrong.
Guests were Mesdames Jeff Keal, Rex Carlton, Emil Brunetti, Bill Weatherbie of Pittsburg, Eva Potter, J.B. Moore, L.C. Patricia's Moore ancestors had originally settled in Bourbon County circa 1860 near Devon and Patricia's great grandfather Joe Moore served in the Kansas legislature in the late 1860's (an uncle Harry Warren also later served in the Kansas legislature). Another pair of great grandparents emigrated from Scotland while some other ancestors came from present-day Northern Ireland. Patricia's family later operated the family grocery store until the 1948. Among her small, but tight-knit group of relatives, Patricia was a niece of former Fort Scott Postmaster Burt Moore as well as a first cousin to former Bourbon County District Court Judge Charles Warren.
Also in 1948, Patricia began working at Western Insurance in Fort Scott, where she worked for most of her adult life including for Western's corporate successors American States and Safeco. Patricia survived the various mergers, acquisitions, and downsizings; retiring in 1998. Patricia worked as a secretary as well as in a number of other claims-related positions. In the latter part of her time with the company, Patricia would occasionally get assigned to out-of-town "storm duty" where she would travel to places that, for example, had been hit by a tornado or hail and she would help process claims and checks to policy holders. Through her professional life, Patricia made many friends and acquaintances young and old in Fort Scott and around the country and was very popular among her co-workers.
Growing up, Patricia and family attended the Methodist Church on National Ave. and later she, Firpo, and Charles attended the Presbyterian Church on Crawford Street. Patricia resided at her home on Eddy Street for over 50 years. Patricia and Firpo were both very proud to be from Fort Scott and content enough that it would've never occurred to them to live anywhere else.
Patricia was known for her beautiful smile ... someone recently observed that she "sparkled". Her eyes were hazel, but her eye color would sometimes change in the light and appeared grey. She had a large nose (though not unattractive); a smaller, more feminine version of her cousin J.B. Moore's nose. Patricia liked to read and would've done well had she attended university as she possessed a good work ethic and the necessary discipline. Patricia liked to laugh which would've drawn her to Firpo. Like others in her family, Patricia possessed a smart-ass streak though perhaps less-so being a mother and as she got older. Patricia recently said of her family and the 6-to-10 relatives who lived next door with others down the street: "that to get along in the family, you had to be either quiet or real boisterous."
The family encourages private sector community financial support for an area-wide dialysis treatment facility at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott. Currently, Fort Scott-area dialysis patients must travel to Pittsburg three times per week for their 3+ hour dialysis treatments and to either Joplin or Kansas City for ANY type of overnight medical treatment. Following renal failure and starting dialysis treatments in October 2011, Patricia's quality of life improved markedly and she regretted not having started dialysis treatments sooner despite the treatment impediments. A service will be held at Cheney-Witt Chapel Friday March 30 preceded a short visitation. Burial will follow at Fort Scott National Cemetery.

PATRICIA SMITH SERVICE
A Celebration of Life service for Patricia Lucille Smith was held at the Cheney Chapel on a beautiful Spring-time afternoon Friday March 30, 2012 with Rev. Chuck Russell presiding. Rev. Russell's theme was one of love and devotion and included were a number of references to Mrs. Smith's marriage to husband "Firpo" and to her relationship with son Charles.
There were floral arrangements, though in lieu of flowers, donations to "Fort Scott Dialysis" had been encouraged. In all, friends and family generously contributed in excess of $1200 to go towards a potential dialysis treatment facility at Mercy Hospital Fort Scott.
Musical selections included the life-affirming "You are the Sunshine of My Life" (Stevie Wonder), the sweetly elegant "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" (from "My Fair Lady"/Nat King Cole), and the resolutely hopeful "I'll Be Seeing You" (Tony Bennett) along with a Glenn Miller (a favorite of Mrs. Smith's) instrumental version of the nostalgic 1940's Cole Porter standard "Begin the Beguine" which played as attendees filed past the casket.
A funeral procession passing by Mrs. Smith's childhood home at 1002 S. Main was most regrettably not planned. A short graveside service followed at the Fort Scott National Cemetery where Mrs. Smith was laid to rest beside husband Firpo and very near to sister Mary Jean Stegge.
Among those represented at the service were Mrs. Smith's former co-workers at Western Insurance and American States, Eddy Street neighbors past and present, school classmates, Mrs. Smith's Harris/Jackson cousins, in-law Gail Potter and family, members of Firpo's cousin Rosalie Cox' family, along with other family and friends. Relatives attending from the Kansas City-area included Kathy Stegge Wright, Sarah K. Jackson, Virginia Carol Keal, Lucille Smith, Sarah & Michael Coleman, Craig Smith, Jimmy Smith, Steve Smith, and Gary Frye plus Gina Hall from Wichita and Don Frye Jr. & wife Gayle from Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Pallbearers included Doug and Brian Potter, Bob Jackson Jr., Bill Cox, Don Hall, and Mitch Quick. Honorary Pallbearers included Bob Jackson, Harry Warren, and Bob Miller.
Family members later met at the Smith home for a catered dinner from Chicken Annie's (another favorite of Mrs. Smith's).
It was later found, perhaps not coincidentally, that Mrs. Smith had passed away on the 90th wedding anniversary of her parents "Pat" and Ardelia Moore.
The "Firpo & Patricia Smith Fort Scott Business Scholarship" has been established through the FSCC Endowment Association at Fort Scott Community College.

The announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Patricia Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moore, 1002 South Main, to Gerald Smith, son of Mrs. Eva Potter, 602 Short street, was last evening at a lovely announcement party given at the home of the honoree's grandmother, Mrs. J.B. Moore, 1008 South Main, by Mrs. Harry Warren.
The 7:30 dessert course was served at quartet tables set in a color scheme of pink and yellow. Bouquets of garden flowers used as centerpieces, were placed in assorted pyrex bowls which were later presented Miss Moore for her kitchen.
At each place were individual placecards affixed to candles. On the back of each card was the wedding date, Sept. 18, written in invisible ink, which was held over the candles flame to reveal the date. The marriage will take place at the home of Mrs. J.B. Moore. Individual favors were wrist corsages. A dessert course of individual decorated cakes and fruit punch was served.
Games appropriate to the occasion were enjoyed. Prizes were offered for the best uses of the centerpieces and for best sandwich recipes. Winners were Mrs. Eva Potter and Miss Roberta Armstrong.
Guests were Mesdames Jeff Keal, Rex Carlton, Emil Brunetti, Bill Weatherbie of Pittsburg, Eva Potter, J.B. Moore, L.C. PATRICIA "PAT" SMITH
Patricia Lucille Smith, aged 81, of 1710 S. Eddy and lifelong Fort Scott resident passed away Monday evening at 8:30 pm March 26, 2012 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri following an extended pneumonia-related illness.
Patricia Lucille Moore was born June 11, 1930 in Fort Scott to Ardelia Kate Moore and Harold Joel "Pat" Moore. Growing up, Patricia and family lived in an apartment above their JB Moore & Sons family grocery store at 10th & Main Street. Patricia attended Main Street Grade School as well as Fort Scott Junior High School and graduated Fort Scott High School in 1948. Patricia played flute in the high school band and orchestra. Several of Patricia's circle of friends at the time included Peggy Majors (Carlton), cousin Sarah Kay Jackson, Margie Bowers (Majors), "Rody" Marsh, Shirley Balocco, Patsy Lewis, Mary Alice Richmond, and Imogene Warren, to name a few. Patricia later attended Fort Scott Junior College.
Patricia and Gerald David "Firpo" Smith met while snow sledding shortly after his honorable discharge from the Navy in December 1947 and were married September 18, 1948 at the home of Patricia's grandmother Mrs. J.B. Moore at 1008 S. Main. Patricia and Firpo remained married for 36 years until his death February 28, 1985. Patricia was fiercely devoted to Firpo and family; demonstrably so during Firpo's health issues which included a triple-bypass heart surgery and later failing health. An acquaintance 20-years their junior, talking about them recently as a couple, characterized Firpo as "a real cool dude" and Patricia as "more quiet" by comparison.
Patricia and Firpo were very proud and loving parents of their son Charles Robert (b. 1965) and the family spent most of its free time together. Patricia and Firpo would always attend Charles' little league baseball games, school activities, and later his high school football games. Aside from personal happiness, their primary goal (mandate) for Charles was that, unlike themselves, he would get a college degree (which he did).
Charles was at Patricia's bedside when she passed. Other family survivors include 21 nieces and nephews including Kathy Stegge Wright and Gary Frye of Kansas City MO, in-laws Gail Potter and Margaret Weatherbie of Fort Scott, Lucille Smith of Shawnee, Elizabeth Shannon of Ardmore OK, and Johnny Mitzner of Grove OK, and a number of cousins including Sarah Kay Jackson and Virginia Carol Keal of Overland Park and Sujean Classen Jeffries of Middletown RI. Also preceding Patricia in death was an infant son David Arnold Smith (April 3-11, 1949), a sister Mary Jean Stegge and brother-in-law Dudley formerly of Joplin, an infant brother George Robert Moore, as well as her parents and grandparents J.B. & Maggie Moore and John & Kate Harris.
