Doris was born the daughter of John Albert & Mary (Gernert) Collins.

She married Ralph L Rimmer Sr on 31 Jul 1952 in Pascagoula, Jackson, Mississippi. They had two children: Rhonda Lynne "Sissy" and Ralph L "Buddy" II.

She served in the Army in WWII as an army nurse. She was a dedicated Registered Nurse for 45 years, taking care of the elderly for the last 15. She was a wonderful grandmother and loved her grand children and great-grand children. They meant the world to her and were a great comfort after Daddy died. Nothing gave her more pleasure than when her great-grand children would want to climb up in "Na-Naw's" lap and have her sing to them. She could always quiet a fussy baby and her grand daughter's knew this and were grateful!

Mama never remarried even though she was only 56 when daddy died. So many of her friends tried to get her to go out but she told them that she had already experienced love and had found the man of her dreams. She didn't need another and no one could take his place. Several men in her church tried to court her but she would only be friends nothing more. She said she would meet him in heaven and when she did she was still going to be his wife and that was that.

After mama had her 2nd heart attack I made the decision to go to Florida and get her. I was working for the USDA at that time and doing a lot of traveling, but you do what you have to. The trip had to be made because I knew that if I didn't go and get her she was going to die a lot sooner and she'd be alone. I couldn't let that happen. When I got home that day I told my husband what I was going to do and he said let's go. So we drove to Tampa and in less than 2 days I had her packed up and her car hitched to the back of a U-Haul and we were on our way home to Alabama. I had to be at work on Monday; not a lot of time to do this nor was there much sleep. But when it's your parent and you love them like I loved mine you do what you have to for them. Those who got her down there didn't have time for a sick sister, they had lives to live. They didn't want to be bothered.

I was still working and had a family and had a life. But when you love someone and they need you, as far as I'm concerned, that takes precedence. And she was my mother and I couldn't just leave her to fend for herself. Five years after mama came to live with me I retired early and devoted my time to her. Retiring early wasn't a problem and I'm glad for the time I had with her. Time with them is something you can never replace and I have those memories to treasure. Spend time with your loved ones, parents and grandparents are so special and precious!

Daddy made me her heir to insurance and other properties long before he died. He knew I'd take care of her if anything ever happened and he knew I would make sure the division of property was done fairly. Some of the last words he said to me were, take care of your mama, I won't be here to see to her. That's a trust I would have never broken. And he didn't have to ask, he new I'd always be there for her. Daddy always made sure everything was right for Mama... He was always looking out for her. She was a priority to him.

I had mama with me the last 8 years of her life. It wasn't easy, it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but I wouldn't trade one day for anything in this world. I love her dearly and I miss her more and more every day. I'll see her again, I have that promise, and when I do I know she'll be whole again.

A Daughter's Dream
a poem by Willo Rain

I had a dream the other day,
And afterwards I had to pray.
I prayed "Dear Lord, Please help me through,
And make this dream be real and true."
See...Mama's sick and she forgets,
at times she says we've never met.

I care for Mama night and day;
I try my best in every way.
With each new dawn, it seems to me,
she loses more of her memory.

It's sad to see when Mama cries;
I hold her close and dry her eyes.
The dream I had, I wish were true,
that's why Dear Lord I've come to you.

In my dream a perfect rose,
was in the hand of a woman posed.
Then...I saw her walking near,
her eyes were bright and crystal clear.

Her mind was sharp, her smile bright,
She had a glow...a 'Shining Light.'
Loving words rolled from her tongue,
the ones I knew when I was young.

She held me in a long embrace,
as tears of Joy rolled down my face.
It was my Mama gleamed in wealth;
For You had given her good health.

The Alzheimer's disease that robs her mind,
Was gone because you love mankind.
That's when I thought, was this a dream?
And my tears began to stream.

Because you let me have a look,
at things You promise in Your Book.
So, now I know this 'dream' IS true,
It's all I need to get me through.

When times get tough, I'll hold her hand,
I'll try to help her understand.
That when she comes to live with You,
You will restore the Mom I knew...
