On 28 Jan 1879 he married Martha Jean Cook in Montague county, Texas, daughter of James Allen Cook & Nancy Jean Gattis.
John and Martha had a son Edmund Sutherlin 1880-1959.
In about May 1889 John married Alice Rice. It is said that he was a bigomist and already married to Mary Melissa Cook.
He and Alice Rice came to Washington where John died.

The buriel is uncertain. According to some relatives, John was buried in Frans cemetery near his mother although no records exist to show a buriel anywhere. Frans cemetery is remote and in very poor condition with a number of unreadable markers.
