Abel is a son of John and Elizabeth (Boyden) Shipley.

Conflicting accounts list Abel Sr.'s birth in 1741, 1742, 1744, and 1745, but the best available records demonstrate that he was at least born after 1743 and before 1748, because he is listed in chronological order of birth when his siblings were born and previous siblings birthdates are known prior to 1743. The edge of the page in which his record appears was torn for him and the sister born after him, Sarah, at the digit beyond 174-. Sarah Shipley Fisk's birth year is verified elsewhere as 1748 (History of Dublin, NH, 1855).

Death year is approximate, based on when Amos' widow Lucy re-married Caleb Farley (Nov 1806): DAR lists his death date as (ANTE) 11-2-1806. The only records I have found that confirm Abel Shipley Sr. died between 1804 and 1806 are in microfilm "State's Copy of Records of Hollis. Vol. 3. Town Records." pp. 31-58. Abel Sr. last appeared in the tax rolls for 1803 along with his son Abel Jr published between Sep. 15-19, 1803. Only one Abel appears in the records 1804-1807, and only "Abel Jr." is listed in "Taxes for 1804" published Aug 16, 1804. Furthermore, Hillsborough County NH Deed 62:370 (Dated: 14 Mar 1804, recorded 6 Aug 1804) was personally acknowledged and signed by Abel Sheple on May 22, 1804 as a land grant to Noah Greeley of Dunstable, NH at $100.00, for "Land in the eastern part of Hollis, being part of a farm I sold to James Jewell & same I bought of James again, containing 7 1/4 acres".

This would indicate Abel Sr.'s date of death to occur between May 22, 1804 and Aug 16, 1804. However, it is possible that this was his last parcel of land (Abel sold off a lot of his land 1784-1804) and he didn't pay taxes again before his death before 1806.

Also, from the amount of taxes collected from the Sheples in the Hollis Town Records, compared to all other citizens in the reports during these years, it is evident that they were relatively poor. For example, both Abel Sr. and Jr. paid about one third of the taxes Lucy's cousin Capt. Caleb Farley in the same records, who 'married' her after Abel's death by Nov. 1806 as a gesture to financially support her.

Abel had married Lucy Farley on Nov. 24th, 1768, Hollis, NH. Abel lived at 26 Howe Lane, Hollis, NH (property 032-045, DAR #273) when his wife Lucy became widowed.

He is listed as the "formal" husband of Lucy Farley on her tombstone, inferring that Caleb Farley was her "informal" husband (see her profile link below). Inscription on Lucy's tombstone is almost completely slated off, but preserved enough to display the original transcription (per recent photos).

There is some evidence that Abel may be buried at Edgewood Cemetery in Nashua in an "Unknown Burial" section: Abel likely died a poor farmer and ended up in a pauper's grave. Secondly, his youngest son Benjamin, some of his children and their descendents are buried immediately next to this plot. However, recent documents demonstrating the date of the founding of Edgewood (after July 16, 1842 when cemetery construction was authorized in Nashville town records. See: History of Nashua, NH) contradict this evidence, unless Abel was disinterred and moved to this cemetery.
