Caroline S. "Carrie" Gwinn was born to Robert and Martha Gwinn in Iowa. Her mother died during the infancy of her younger brother Montie, and the two children were raised by their step-mother, Rachel Elizabeth Hull Gwinn, after their father remarried in 1858.
Carrie married Henry D. Blatchley, a drugstore owner, in June of 1887. Carrie was a teacher, and the first to teach in Caldwell's one-room school in fall of 1883. Later she taught at the College of Idaho. Much of the land for the college was donated by the Blactchleys, and Blatchley Hall was originally their home.

They are not known to have had any children.

Carrie is mentioned in at least four books:
Lukas, J. Anthony. Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America. Simon and Schuster, 1998.

French, Hiram T. History of Idaho: A narrative account of its historical progress, its people and its principal interests, Volume 1. Lewis Publishing, 1914.

Lewis Publishing. An illustrated history of the state of Idaho: containing a history of the state of Idaho from the earliest period of its discovery to the present time, together with glimpses of its auspicious future; illustrations ... and biographical mention of many pioneers and prominent citizens of to-day. 1899.

Strahorn, Carrie Adel.. Fifteen thousand miles by stage: A woman's unique experience during thirty years of path finding and pioneering from the Missouri to the Pacific and from Alaska to Mexico. G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1911.
