Her father died when she was a girl leaving her mother impoverished with six children to raise. Her mother kept the family together by running a small store. On a trip to visit relatives in Boston when she was a young woman, she met her future husband, Samuel Eliot, when shopping in his store. He was a widower with just one daughter and he was smitten with Catharine. She and her family were cautious due to the age difference, and her brother was sent to check him out. He passed approval with both his future brother-in-law and then mother-in-law. After just three months of courtship they were married on April 19, 1786.

Theirs was a loving and devoted marriage that produced seven children. Samuel loved to provide Catharine with fine clothes and household furnishings and she introduced him to her love of flowers and gardening. He built a greenhouse for them to enjoy in their garden.
