U.S. Congressman. A distinguished Boston figure, he attended the Boston Latin School, graduated from Harvard University in 1817 and from Harvard Divinity School in 1820. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1834-37), Mayor of Boston, (1837-39) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1843-44). In 1850, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert C. Winthrop, serving until 1851. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was treasurer of Harvard University, (1842-53).
