Mr. Eliot rose from an impoverished youth to become one of Boston's leading and most successful merchants. He lived in a large, fine house at the corner of Beacon and Tremont Streets. He was extremely generous usually giving his gifts anonymously through a third party.

Gravesite Details

Samuel Eliot and members of his family were buried in an underground tomb. The stone to mark the entrance to the tomb is missing. The entrance to Samuel's family tomb is about where the pale small stone in the center of the photo stands.
