She was the daughter of Harmon and Jane "Jenny," or "Jincy" (Barnes) Hayes. She was the first of Thomas Jefferson Coffey's four wives. They were married Sept. 14, 1845, in Grainger County, Tennessee. She bore him at least nine children: Mariah Jane, Eliza Louisa, Matilda "Tilda," Leroy "Lee," Alice Nancy, Sofron Ellen, Colonel W., Isabelle, and Ollie Coffey.

Her surname is spelled "Coffee" on the headstone, although the usual spelling of the "Coffey."
