Christened 11 October 1707 at Lelant, a younger son of William and Joan (Thurleby) Hawes. His two elder brothers William and Thomas served as parish clerks of Lelant, and after their deaths, Richard took this office and served until his death in 1775. He married Gertrude Hosking, granddaughter and one of the heirs of her grandfather, Arthur Edwards, gentleman. He and Gertrude had three children: Richard, Jane and Joseph. Richard was buried 17 March 1775.
