Henry B. Payne (1810-1896) - Find a Grave Memorial

U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1832, studied law, was admitted to the bar, then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and practiced law (1834 to 1846). He served as the Cleveland City Clerk in 1836, was the founder of the Cleveland and Columbus Railroad, and was a member of the Ohio State Senate (1849 to 1851). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed a member of the Electoral Commission for the U.S. presidential election results of 1876. In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death.
