U.S. Senator. Attending Central College at Fayette, (1911-14), he graduated from the University of Missouri, in 1915 and then became successful in the newspaper and publishing business. He was Mayor of Macon, Missouri, (1930-32) and a member, Missouri State Senate, (1933-44). In 1945, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harry S. Truman, serving until 1947. After leaving the Senate, he resumed his newspaper and publishing business, until retiring in 1973.
