Betty Barbara Briggs, of Bloomington, formerly of Macon, MO, died Wednesday April 23, at Redbud Hills Retirement Community. She was 81 years old.

Born Sept. 7, 1926, in Macon, she was the daughter of Frank P. and Catherine (Shull) Briggs.

Betty's father was the owner and publisher of the Macon Chronicle-Herald for 49 years as well as mayor of Macon and was chosen to replace Harry Truman as U.S. Senator in 1945 when Truman became vice president. Betty was a member of the Anne Helm Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was active in the Redbud Hills Retirement Community Choir. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Macon.

Betty is survived by one sister, Ruth Briggs Bratek, professor emeritus of the University of Missouri, School of Journalism, currently of Bloomington; a brother-in-law, Michael Ramon of Chico, CA; sister-in-law, Marjorie Briggs of Lake Oswego, OR; her niece, Cathy Dvorak and her husband Jack of Bloomington; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Thomas and Eugene Briggs; and a sister, Dorothy Ramon.

A memorial service will be held at Redbud Hills at a date to be announced. Interment will be at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette, MO.

A memorial service for Betty B. Briggs will be held Tuesday, April 29, in the Redbud Hills Atrium at 7:30 p.m. with Rick Buehler presiding.

Interment will be at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette, Mo., on Friday, May 2nd.
