Son of Stephen and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Stewart. At age ten when his mother died he went to live with Dr. Moses Kirkpatrick (his Uncle). He studied medicine at Salem, IN., not liking it he went into politics, and was clerk of the court at Delphi, Carroll Co., IN. for 25 years. He was acknowledged leader of the Democratic party of his day. All of his children died young. According to his sister, Cynthia, a kinder brother never lived. He published a book on Carroll Co. history in 1872 entitled "Recollections of the Early Settlement of Carroll County, Indiana, Printed by Hitchcock and Walden 1872". In it he states that he started from Clark Co., IN. on Mar. 27,1830 and arrived in Carroll Co., IN. on April 10,1830 where he settled.
