He graduated cum laude from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1951. He first served as County attorney for Miller County, Georgia before being elected a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for Miller County (1953-54). He served as legal counsel for the Rural Roads Authority (1956-58) and as Executive Secretary to Governor S. Ernest Vandiver (1958-61). He then was Chairman, Home Rules Sub-Committee, Constitutional Revision Commission (1963-64).
He was elected the fifth Lieutenant Governor of Georgia (1963-67) under his fellow Democrat, Governor Carl Edward Sanders who was Georgia's first New South governor and provided progressive leadership. After leaving public office, he returned to his law practice in Albany, GA. Posthumously, a sixty-five mile portion of Georgia State Route 91 in rural southwest Georgia was designated the Peter Zack Geer Highway.
