Wife of a World War 1 Veteran
Mother of World War II Veterans
Mary Ruth Burkhart was born February 2nd, 1899 in Knox County, Tennessee to Emmanuel Taylor Burkhart (1875-1938) and Johnanna (Webb) Burkhart (1877-1925). She was one of nine children borne of their union. Emmanuel had been married to Johnanna Webb until she died in 1925. He then married Lula Haun, who bore him five children.
Mary Ruth married Darak Blackburn Armstrong on August 11th, 1920 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They were the parents of three children:
Dan Clinton, b.June 1924, Lynn Blackburn, b.1926, and Martha Ruth Armstrong, b.1928. Sadly, both sons have passed away - Dan d.2014 and Lynn d.2015. Martha, who married and had four (or five?) children, is still living as of this writing and doing well.
Darak and Mary raised their three children in their family home in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. He was a machinist for the railroad, supporting his family and sending his children to college. Darak was a World War One Veteran. Both Lynn and Dan proudly served in the military during World War II. Lynn served in the U.S. Army and Dan served in the U.S. Navy.
Darak died on January 1st, 1981, not quite a month before his 86th birthday. He was laid to rest at Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. His dear wife, Mary Ruth, followed him in death on September 2nd, 1992 at the age of 93 years, 7 months. She was laid to rest by her husband at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. They are together for eternity in Heaven with their Loved Ones who have gone before them and since their passings. May they All Rest Peacefully in Paradise.
