U.S. Congressman. Moving to Mississippi, he graduated from Somerville Institute and was a teacher in Noxubee County, for several years. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a First Lieutenant. After the war, he resumed teaching, plus engaged in mercantile and agricultural pursuits, (1865-78). Entering politics, he was a member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives, in 1878 and elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses, serving (1889-93). After leaving Congress, he resumed his previous business pursuits until his death.
