John Fredrick Shilling, 88, of Farwell, died October 20, 2011, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. John was born to John W. and Eula (Perry) Shilling on November 20, 1922, in Gilmore Township. He married Mary Lou Wiggins on September 20, 1947, in Farwell. Mary Lou preceded him in death on November 21, 2008.

John is survived by his children; daughter Diane Updyke of Sunfield, MI, son Donald of Evans, GA, and son and daughter-in-law Bill and Dawn Shilling of Farwell, his grandchildren; Drew (Mary) Updyke of Grand Rapids, MI, Blake (Kristina) Updyke of Wyoming, MI, Joshua Shilling of Egypt, Marissa Shilling of Farwell, and great-grandchildren Jeremy Updyke of Grand Rapids, MI, Nick Sawinski of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Katie Sawinski of Grand Rapids, MI, his brother Herb (Agnes) Shilling, and sister Jean (Bob) Parker, in-laws; June Shilling, Phyllis Wiggins, Virginia Holder, Bernice (Gene) Cashin, Donna (Delmer) Scott, and Bess Wiggins. Also special neighbors and friends, Paul and Lillian Peet.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by son-in-law, Gary Updyke, in 2010, grandson Matthew Shilling in 2006, brothers Bob, Mike, and Carl, brother-in-laws Boyd Wiggins, Ed Holder, and Edward Wiggins.

John was a veteran of WWII, serving in China-Burma-India Theatre. In his younger days, he drove truck as a car-hauler and then worked at Holley Carburetor. He was the head of the maintenance department at Farwell Area Schools for many years before he retired in 1987. John was a lifelong member of the Farwell United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, baking cookies for his grandkids, and spending time with his family. He was a kind-hearted, hard-working gentleman who is very loved and will be greatly missed by many.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with a memorial service scheduled for 8 p.m.
