OBITUARY :
GEORGE CALVIN GLADHILL, 95, went home to be with the Lord in the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Homewood at Williamsport, where he and his wife have been residents for three years.
Born in Iron Springs, Pa., in 1916, his family moved to Gettysburg, Pa. He and his wife, Mary Benner Gladhill, resided in Hagerstown, Md., since 1947 when they married and located there for his job. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy David Gladhill, and mother, Mary Sophia Study Gladhill.
Other than his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Gladhill Bottenus; a son, Alan George Gladhill and his wife, Debbie; four sisters, Emma Margaret Fair, Alice Virginia Hartsock, Betty Jane Geiger and Audrey Caroline Flynn; and one brother, Robert David Gladhill. He has one granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Bottenus; one grandson, Jason Daniel Bottenus and wife, Stephanie; and two great-granddaughters, Sadie Lemon Bottenus and Scout Cardamom Bottenus.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Katherine Schneider, and a brother, Roy Edward Gladhill.
Previously, he was employed as a railroad lineman. He worked for Western Union, from which he retired after 35 years as a plant maintainer. After two years of peace and retirement, he went back to work for Washington County Hospital for 10 years as an electrician and retired from there at age 70.
He was a member of Christ's Reformed Church, UCC of Hagerstown, for 60 years.
For many years in the '50s and '60s, he volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 8, and Girl Scouts of America, Troop 22, both located at Christ's Reformed Church. He also volunteered his time and knowledge to the YMCA of Hagerstown for many years, helping to maintain the Day Camp on Dam 4 Road during the '60s.
Funeral services will be Saturday at noon at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD 21740. Serving during the funeral will be the Rev. Greg Meserole, and the Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
