William Long "Billy" Belvin, 97, died peacefully on March 30, 2009, at the Benzie T. Rice Home in Columbia, SC. Billy was born in Raleigh, NC, on June 4, 1911, the third of four children of the late Charles Hinton Belvin, Jr., and Carrie Eugenia Long Belvin. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University. Early in his professional career he was a Senior Research Chemist with the National Aniline Division of Allied Chemical & Dye where he contributed to the war effort by developing and producing atabrine and high explosives. He was later a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Bureau of Research, University of Arkansas, and served as Assistant Director of Research at the American Chicle Company in Flushing, NY. From 1956 until his retirement in 1980, he was Director of the Charles Holmes Herty Foundation in Savannah, GA. There he was responsible for many pioneering research efforts in the pulp and paper field, utilizing pine and native southern hardwoods in multiple ways. He was an active member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, the Forest Products Research Society and the American Forestry Association. Billy was an active layman in the Methodist and United Methodist Churches and enjoyed his involvement in both the Kiwanis Club and, after retirement, the Golden K Club where he loved to sing in the Men's Glee Club. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Harvey Love Belvin, whom he began courting in high school. Also predeceasing him were his sister, Elizabeth Pullen Belvin Jones and brother, Charles Hinton Belvin, III, both of Raleigh. Billy is survived by his brother, Daniel Long Belvin of Silver Spring, MD, and by his children; Elizabeth Belvin of Dunkirk, NY; William L. Belvin, Jr., and wife, Gayle of Columbia, SC; and Jeanne B. Robinson of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Surviving also are grandchildren in whose accomplishments he always delighted, Vivian Buhrman and husband, Tom of Durham, NC, Brent Belvin and wife, Dena of Durham, NC, Robert Belvin and wife, Uta of Woodstock, GA, Merrill Robinson and wife, Courtney of Bothell, WA, and Suzan Belvin of Rougemont, NC; 10 great-grandchildren will also grieve his passing. A memorial service was held at the Benzie T. Rice Home, 100 Finley Road, in Columbia at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2009. A gathering for family and friends of the family in Raleigh will be held at 1:00 p. m. on Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC. Interment will follow at 3:00 p. m. at Oakwood Cemetery.
