Edward Knight Dana
With a wave of good-bye to his sweetheart of 66 years, Edward Knight Dana passed away at his home August 3, 2011. He fought a good fight, and endured to the end without complaint.
Born August 5, 1917 to Edward "S" and Nellie Knight Dana in Marriott, Utah, he was their 4th child and 2nd son, of nine sons and daughters and was named after his father. The Great Depression shaped his character. He lived by the motto….Make do, or do without. At age 14 he went to live with his Uncle Floyd Knight in View, Idaho. He knew the value of hard work.
He enlisted in the Army in 1938 and was drafted at the outbreak of World War II. After being wounded he returned to the States and married Phyllis Shirley Hansen, May 26, 1945. Later they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple, Oct. 24, 1947. A daughter and son were born to this union; Evelyn and Bruce.
Dad had a kind, gentle heart. He was known for his good humor (he enjoyed telling jokes) and his unique laughter. He was resilient to life's disappointments and trials.
Dad had a love affair with drawing, painting and carving wood. It was part of his personality and a big part of his life. His favorite subjects were God's creatures of the forest and domesticated animals. He had a soft spot for animals that were confined, always concerned if they had enough food and water.
Dad was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings.
Dad was a genuine family man. He has been an excellent example as a good son, a good brother, a true and loving husband and father to us. Dad loved Mother with all of his heart. He lived as many years as he could to be her companion and help mate, so she wouldn't have to live alone. He provided for us by farming, trucking and as a security guard.
He is leaving us wonderful memories of trips to Idaho, Montana and his favorite destination, Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Evelyn (Bruce) Giles of Morgan; son Bruce (Brenda) Dana of Hyde Park; 10 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; brothers, Max (Judy), Kenneth and sisters, Valerie (Jack) Hobbs and Beth Russell. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Gertrude, Leland, Melba and Carl and a great-grandson, Connor Dana.
A special thanks to our Mother for the compassionate, vigilant care she gave him during the last few years of his life and to Applegate Hospice, Scott (for being there in his final hours), Julie and Lonnie.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 8, 2011 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Friends may call at the mortuary on Sunday, August 7th from 6 to 7p.m. and Monday, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Interment will be in Richmond, Utah.
