Sam Bass, 78, of Amarillo, died Saturday, July 23, 2011.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church in Dumas with Darrell Wait officiating. Private burial will be in Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Bass was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Beaver County, Okla., to Bertha and Marion Bass. He graduated from Felt High School and joined the U.S. Army. After discharging from the Army, he married Betty Gove on Feb. 18, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. He moved to Dumas in 1957, and worked for Southwestern Public Service for 38 years until retiring.

Betty and Sam traveled the United States. He loved spending time with his family and grandkids. Sam loved the outdoors, fishing and camping. He enjoyed talking to people, nobody was a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Walter Bass.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Amarillo; a daughter, Deborah Hammit and husband Gary of Fritch; a son, Jerry Bass and wife Marjorie of San Antonio; three grandsons, Wheeler Hammit and wife Heather of Spearman, Seth Hammit and wife Jacey of Spearman and Justin Bass of San Antonio; two great-grandchildren, Brayson Hammit and Brancey Hammit, both of Spearman; three brothers, Leroy Bass and wife Mary Jo of Felt, Okla., Dale Bass and wife Joann of Albuquerque, N.M., and Herb Bass of Farmington, N.M.; three sisters, Norma Vann of California, Gladys Ottinger of Boise City, Okla., and Doris Smith and husband Paul of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Boxwell Brothers in Dumas, 500 N. Maddox St.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to favorite charity.
