A B-29 bomber assigned to the 352nd Bomb Squadron of the 301st Bomb Wing, at Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish, La., Tail No. B-29 44-27261, crashed on takeoff from Wheelus Air Base, Tripoli, Libya, on Feb. 2, 1953. The 14 crew members from Barksdale and one flier not assigned to the base all were killed.

Killed in the crash were:

Capt. Charles Wayne Eley, aircraft commander; 1st Lt. Lonzo P. Armstrong, pilot; 1st Lt. John Thomas Hackbarth, bombardier; 1st Lt. Daniel D. Corvelli, navigator;
2nd Lt. Frederick William Young, radar observer; Master Sgt. William H. Grant, medical specialist; Tech. Sgt. David W. Bolstad; Sgt. Frederick W. Jones; A2C Harold David Bellotte; A1C Talmadge Lavern Kloster, gunner; Airman Frank James Lovvorn, radio operator; A1C James Clark McDowell; A1C Donald V. Wilson, gunner; and A1C James A. Yuvan, gunner.
