Graveside services for Mr. L. D. Nichols, age 79, of the Walnut Springs Community in Panola County, TX, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at City Cemetery in Carthage with Bro. Buddy Briggs officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Nichols passed away on Monday morning, July 18, 2011, in Carthage.

Mr. Lawrence Draper "L.D." Nichols was born on July 26, 1931, in Natchitoches, LA to Draper William and Maudie H. Roark Nichols. Mr. Nichols attended Carthage Schools and Panola College. He served his country in the U.S. Army and Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. Mr. Nichols married Barbara Jo Murray on Nov. 20, 1954, in Kingsville, TX. He worked as an immigration officer for the Federal Government until his retirement. Mr. Nichols moved to Panola County in 1988, from Virginia Beach, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernon and Norman E. Nichols; and one son, Thomas Murray Nichols.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Jo Nichols; one son, Lawrence Draper Nichols, Jr. and wife Martha of White Oak; one daughter, Penny Marie Nichols of Dickinson; one brother, Tommy McNair of Carthage; six grandchildren, Robert Brooks, Katherine Marvin, Jessica Henderson, Lauren Nichols, Tina Marie Nichols, and Mindy Jo Nichols; and two great-grandchildren, Murray Draper Marvin and Robert Anthony Brooks.
