When enemy fire came upon his patrol in the Helmond providence of Afghanistan, U.S. Navy Corpsman Aaron D. Ullom ran from cover in a shallow ditch to a Marine who had been wounded. Unfazed, the 20-year-old sailor performed what he was trained to do. While applying a tourniquet to the Marine, lying on top of him above the ditch, Ullom suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Seaman Ullom was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
