Born 17 September 1804 in Groton, he graduated Williams College in 1830. Ordained as a minister on 17 October 1833. Reverend Avery entered upon an agency for the American Tract Society and spent two years in southern states and three years in New England in that capacity. He married to Mrs. Sarah Ann (Skidmore) Agnew on 23 July 1835. Reverend Avery was installed as the seventh pastor of the Groton Congregational Church on 9 October 1839 where he preached for twelve years. The Reverend Avery requested the termination of his ministry duties on 15 April 1851.
