Son of Rev. Jared Reid and Sarah (Skidmore) Avery. Mustered in to the Connecticut Volunteers 21st Regiment, Company C in 1862. He participated in the Virginia campaign, taking part in the battles of Fredericksburg, Drewery's Bluff and Cold Harbor. He mustered out in 1865 in Petersburg, VA. Married to Josephine Lamb in 1866. Established his business, J.R. Avery's Provision Store at 19 Broad Street in 1886. He was a past commander of the W.W. Perkins Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.
