In 1844 Henry Garrison (brother) was appointed guardian of Emmanuel and Barbara. Emmanuel was 10 on Dec "last" which we assume to mean he was born in December 1833. The note did not give a date. Henry was to remain Emmanuel's guardian until Emmanuel was 14 years old (i.e. December 1847).

Emanuel Garrison married a Sarah A. Spaulding on 29 Dec 1859 in Butler Co, OH. She died in 1861. His pension papers from the Civil War confirm this. This point was verified by his sister, Barbara Garrison Judy.

Emanual Garrison died last Saturday afternoon at his home on East William Street, from an apoplectic shock. His funeral was held on Monday afternoon, Rev. Charles Noble Frost, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducting the service at the house, and Custer Post, No. 81, G. A. R. conducting the Post burial service at the grave.

Mr. Garrison's death was to him welcome release from physical bondage that made him helpless for twenty-eight years. During those years his sufferings had been at times almost unendurable, twisting and deforming him by slow torture until he had scarcely a normal joint in his body. It was truly said of him, and the saying was as parhetic as true, that while he escaped the horrors of Andersonville in the Civil War, in which he served as a member of the Forty second Ohio Infantry, he brought home with him from the battlefield the germs of disease that chained him fast to the pillars of suffering from which only death offered escape. But chains that bound to him with double strength those upon whom he had to rely for care. And so tightly did those chains draw that when they were broken they left the hearts they had bound bleeding and sore.

Emanuel Garrison was born in Middletown, Ohio, and was in his 77th year. He served in the War as noted above, and afterwards for a number of years was a commercial traveler. He married Sophia Otis in 1865 and after two years spent in the West they returned to this town, living for many years near Kanona. They came to Bath to reside eight years ago. Mrs. Garrison, with two sons, Dr. Frank O. Garrison, of New York, and Will D. Garrison, of this village survive. Mr. Garrison was an Odd Fellow and a member of the G.A.R.
