Sikeston - Johnie J. Abernathy, 77, of Sikeston, died Wednesday at his home after and extended illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1918, at Kennett, the son of Henry William and Lavadie Mae Hoxworth Abernathy. He married Helen Ruth Fisk on June 16, 1937, at Sikeston.
He was a truck driver for McKnight Keaton Grocery Co. here. He moved to Sikeston in 1979, after retiring from the Chevrolet Plant in St. Louis.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Harold E. Abernathy; a daughter, Brenda Kay Tubb; two brothers, Leroy and Bob Abernathy; six sisters, Mary Carver, Fern Thomas, Tinia Clark, Pretshie Ellsworth; Maudie Denton and Violet Farmer; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service will be held Friday at United Pentecostal Church. Burial will be at the New Morley Cemetery.
