Fern Thomas, 87, of Oran, died May 9, 2013, at her home. Born March 24, 1926, in Clarkton, to the late Henry William and Levadie Mae Hoxworth Abernathy, she owned a day care center for many years, was employed at the Hat Factory in Oran, and also owned a ceramic shop. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 16 in Cape Girardeau and also a lifetime member of the VFW #5900 in Marble Hill. On December 6, 1941, in Charleston, she married Montgomery (Monty) P. Thomas, who preceded her in death.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Cecil Abernathy and Johnie Joseph Bennett Abernathy; and six sisters, Mary Lucille Carver, Rosie Rosetta Abernathy, Maudie Iville Montgomery Denton, Tinia Loretta Clark, Betty Jean Oliver Huffman and Pretshie Ann Ellsworth.
Survivors include: two brothers and one sister-in-law, Leeroy Winfer "Butch" Abernathy and Bobby Eugene and Marie Abernathy, all of Morley; and one sister, Violet Farmer of Sikeston.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel, where services will follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. David Thompson, pastor of Morley Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in the New Morley Cemetery.
