Fred Louis McNair was born January 22, 1934 in Plymouth, North Carolina to Abraham Lincoln McNair and Martha Jane Walker McNair. He was raised in a Christian home. He received his early education in Plymouth and graduated from high school in San Francisco, California.

Fred joined the US Army and served his country well. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1953.

He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and served God faithfully. He moved to Chicago in 1961 and graduated from Coyne Trade School as an electrician. He joined Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ that same year, under the leadership of Bishop E. Lenox.

Fred met and married the love of his life, Priscilla, on September 2, 1962. To this union, four children were born. In 1964 the family moved to Washington DC. Fred was ordained as an Elder, under the leadership of Elder Harvey Lewis. In 1968 the family moved back to Chicago.
