STATESBORO - Mr. Howell Ambrose Campbell, age 82, died Sunday morning at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, where he was a sergeant in the 152nd Regiment Combat Team. Mr. Campbell served in New Guinea and Neumfoor Island and received the Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals. He retired from Southland Life Insurance Company after 30 years of service and also worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart for many years. Mr. Campbell was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Lord Campbell.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela E. Campbell of Statesboro and Patricia and James L. "Pete" Byrd of Nevils; a grandson, Lanny L. Byrd of Nevils; a granddaughter, Laura K. Byrd of Nevils; two sisters, Evelyn C. Deal and Bernice Brannen, both of Statesboro; and a brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Bonnie Campbell of Statesboro.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Randy Waters, Elder John Shelton Mikell and the Rev. Dan Joyner officiating. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
