Chris was the oldest surviving son of Alva Shipp Driver and Jim Littrell; he was married to June Hicks and Ruth Kopecki. He had three biological children: Brenda (daughter of June), who is deceased, and two living daughters with Ruth. He also adopted his grandson. He was named for the brother of his Littrell grandfather, also Christopher Wesley Littrell and called Chris.

Chris joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served in Italy during World War II. He was discharged after the war. He and June ran a cafe in Minnesota. After June died, he rejoined the military and became a career member of the US Air Force. He served a total of 32 years, including service during WWII and Korea. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.

From the time Chris was young his father and grandfather were occasional coal miners to finance their farm in Oklahoma. At some time in his late teens he also mined coal, living in the coal camp community of Louellen (his residence on the censuses of 1930 and 1940). His father died in 1929, and his mother ran a boarding house in Louellen to support her three young sons.
