James Henry "Jim" Littrell was the son of John Riley and Harriet Francis Silvers Littrell. He was born in in Pulaski County, Kentucky, on April 14, 1890. Although he put Somerset as his place of birth on his WWI draft registration, he was most likely born at home in the Mount Victory/Dykes area. He was the only boy in the family and had an older sister with four more sisters born after him. By order of birth his sisters were:
Callie Bell Littrell Burns (1888 - 1975),
Laura Littrell Dekrey (1893 - 1923),
Pearl Mae Littrell Hollingsworth (1896 - 1975),
Ella Littrell Hanson (1899 - 1957), and
Nellie Frances Littrell Harbison (1908 - 2002).

By the time he was twenty years old, he had moved with his family to the Indianola, Oklahoma area. On March 20, 1917, he married Alva Retta Driver. They worked at farming. The couple had four sons: Stanley, who died as an infant; Christopher Wesley, James Harold, and John Riley Littrell.

By 1929 the family had moved first to Checotah, Oklahoma, to farm and then to Harlan, Kentucky, for Jim to work in the coal mines to make money to support the Oklahoma farm that he and his father owned together. On Christmas Day in 1929 Jim died of appendicitis in Harlan, Kentucky. With the Great Depression beginning, he left a widow, Alva Littrell, and 3 sons, Chris, age 10 1/2; Harold, age 9; and John, age 3. His place of burial is at Kildav, Kentucky, in a cemetery on the top of a mountain, and his grave lies next to that of his sister Laura Littrell Dekrey. His grave remained unmarked until 1972, when his sons returned to the area to hand carry a headstone up the mountain and place it on his grave.
