Anna S. Reckard, age 89, resident of Edmore, ND, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the Edmore Memorial Rest Home in Edmore, ND.

Anna Sophia Summers was born June 5, 1920 in Gove, Kansas, the third of five children of Edmund Silas and Catherine Barbara (Shirley) Summers. She was raised on her parents farm and educated in Gove County. In 1929, the family moved to McAllaster, KS, where grandma Shirley taught Anna how to do lovely embroidery hand work, which she enjoyed all of her life until her eye sight failed. In 1932, they moved to Wallace, KS, where Anna completed her education. Anna's mother died in 1939.

Anna married Orval Fuller Reckard on November 27, 1951 in Russell Springs, KS. They traveled most of their life together. Anna spent her time raising her family and also worked as a nurse's aide. They lived in Elko, NV, Beasley, TX, Independence, LA and Savannah, GA, before settling in North Dakota. Anna and Orval divorced in 1958.

Anna continued living in various communities in North Dakota before moving to the Edmore Memorial Rest Home in July of 1981. It was here that she made countless friends and has been "Grandma" to several staff members, especially Tammy Berg and Debbie Anderson. Anna enjoyed receiving cards, letters, presents, and Christmas goodies. She also was thrilled in giving presents to her friends. Although her family was at a great distance, she loved them very much, and would always be with them in spirit.

Surviving members of her family include her 2 daughters, Viola Reckard of Grafton, ND, and Anna E. Reckard of Jamestown, ND; 2 nieces; 3 nephews; several cousins; and a host of friends.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Catherine Summers; 3 brothers, Charley Summers, Elmer Summers, and Edmund Summers Jr.; 1 sister, Viola McGuire; and her 2 children, Virginia Reckard in 1953 and Orval Reckard Jr. in 1983.

Anna's Funeral Service will be held at the Edmore Memorial Rest Home of Edmore, ND, on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Don Reynolds.

Interment will be in the Edmore Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the rest home on Thursday, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. The honorary casketbearers will be the residents and staff of the Edmore Memorial Rest Home. Arrangements with the Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, ND.
