Lebbeus spent his youth near Mt. Pleasant. When the Civil War bgan, he and his brother, James, ran away from home and enlisted in the Union Army.
Lebbeus enlisted as a Private on 18 Mar 1864 at the age of 19. He mustered in Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry on 18 Mar 1864. He mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
After his discharge, he returned to Mt. Pleasant and married Amanda Olinger on 5 Mar 1868. They had eleven children. They eventually moved to Shenandoah, Iowa.
Several years prior to his death, cataracts came on his eyes, and his last years were spent in blindness. Lebbeus died in 1934 at age 89 years 11 months and 27 days.
