He attended Millsaps College; served as supervisor of transportation for Coahoma County Schools and supervisor for the Coahoma County Welfare Department for a number of years; he was superintendent of Sunday School at Jonestown Methodist Church for several years and was a member of the Board of Stewards; he was a Shriner and a Mason. He also had farming interests in Jonestown, where he was a lifelong resident.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Etheredge Butler; two daughters, Mrs. Ben Hamilton of Hampton, Va., and Mrs. William M. Hutton of Seal Beach, California; two brothers, Moss M. Butler of Jonestown and David Salter Butler of Lyon; and four grandchildren, Holly Butler Hutton, George William Hutton and Suzanne Petrie Hutton, all of Seal Beach, Calif., and Margaret Sue Hamilton of Hampton, Va.
