William was born in Walnut Township, Saline County, KS Oct. 7, 1870 to young homesteaders James & Sarah Coburn from Pennsylvania. After his father's early demise from pneumonia in 1873, William was taken back to Pennsylvania by his mother. There in Philadelphia County, PA William was raised and educated by his paternal grandparents John & Jane Coburn.
William returned to Kansas with his grandparents in 1884. Here he met and married Miss Hannah McVittie. They were married in her father's home on his homestead in Liberty Twp.
William & Hannah continued to farm the McVittie homestead and raise their son Samuel Jasper until William's death Oct. 1, 1933 of diabetes.
