Hannah McVittie was born in Mount Hope Township, Orange County, New York on her maternal grandfather's farm. At a young age, in 1876, Hannah traveled with her parents and sister Mary Bell to Saline Co., Kansas where they established a homestead in Liberty Township, 15 miles southeast of Salina.

Hannah married William Coburn of the county in 1898. The wedding was held in her father's home. Hannah's father Charles died that same year and the young couple set up housekeeping on the family farm. They continued to farm, raise and educate their one son Samuel Jasper until William's death in 1933. She was a member of the First Methodist Church here.

Hannah Coburn passed away at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 1945 at the farm home where she had spent most of her life.
