John Lott Sr. served in the United States Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in Unit F of 43rd Infantry, USA as a Private in Illinois.
Family tradition is that after the death of John Lott Sr's first wife Louisa Konkle Lott, Frances Isabel Roberts moved in the household to help care for John and Louisa's children Helen, Rance and Frances. John Lott Sr soon married Frances Isabel Roberts thereafter.
Between 1864 and 1870, John and Frances Isabel left Michigan and headed west. Their third, fourth and fifth children Eva, Lizzie, and Fred were all born in Hancock County, Illinois. John and Frances Isabel came to Nebraska and homesteaded seven miles northeast of Fairbury, Nebraska near the Rock Creek Station Crossing. Helen Lott, John's oldest daughter by first wife Louisa, stayed behind in Kent County, Michigan. Helen died 17 April 1870, a month before her half-brother John Lott Jr was born near Fairbury, Nebraska.
John Lott Sr was remarkably strong in his old age. The day before his death he mowed a large field of oats. The morning after he was not feeling well. Medial aid came but could not help his pain. John Lott Sr died at 2 o'clock on 21 July 1898 at age 78 years at his homestead near Fairbury. After the death of their father, Alice and Lizzie Lott lived in the homestead until their deaths.
