Wm. M. Coggins, was the son of John & Sarah (unk) COGGINS, b. TN. Found in Arkansas census, one of several children.
It is unknown at this time whether the parents moved on to Indian Terr. or stayed.
On Dec. 9, 1864, he married Nancy DUKE, dau of Wm and Sarah DUKE.
Where Rev. Coggins was ordained is not known to me. But evidently he was known as a Free Will Baptist minister, and came to Indian Territory,(Okla) probably before 1900, per an old letter by Eld. Tom J. Townsend, an early arriver to Indian Territory, asking him to come from Texas and help form some four FWB churches into an association and preach for them. By 1904, Wm. was preaching in the area churches from which the Center Association was formed in 1893, in Chickasaw Nation (Pontotoc Co. OK).
He was elected to be moderator of this Center Association in 1906, following moderator Rev. Mark Harris's move to Arkansas. He continued in this position for years, in most every session until his late retirement. He was pastor of several different churches throughout the years, including Blanchard in McClain Co., and his name appears in many oldchurch records as having preached or pastored there.
He was the elected delegate by this group to represent them in the Southwestern Association of Free Will Baptists, which met Nov. 1906, at Decator, TX, a group that was not involved with the Randall merger in 1911.
He was always in the forefront of leadership and encouragement--in the support of the Tecumseh FWB College (OK) which had been started in 1917.
He was beloved by all for his sincerity, foresight, intregrity, faithfulness, and his attention to the ministry.
At the August 1946 session of the Center Association, it was reported that "our old beloved moderator has passed away;" then it was voted "for the Association to place a monument at his grave."
