Leonard married on February 15, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Gertrude Groen. They farmed firstly in Rock Valley, Sioux County, Iowa. In 1956 they lived in Bellflower, California. In 1985 they returned to Iowa, Sioux Center.
They had two sons, Ronald and Steve DeRaad.
